Learn the essential requirements to become a foster or adoptive parent.

Basic Requirements

At Shepherd Kidz Cares, we welcome both single and married individuals who are ready to make a positive impact on a child’s life. To ensure that each child is placed in a safe, stable, and nurturing home, prospective foster/adoptive parents must meet the following basic requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years of age, financially stable, and responsible, mature adults.
  • Complete an application form (our staff will gladly assist you if needed).
  • Provide personal and lifestyle information for background checks.
  • Submit both relative and non-relative references.
  • Show proof of marriage and/or divorce (if applicable).
  • Agree to a home study, which includes visits from our staff and interactions with all household members.
  • Consent to a criminal history background check and an abuse/neglect check for all adults in the household.
  • Attend free training sessions to better understand the needs of abused and neglected children.

We are here to guide you through the process every step of the way. Together, we can create a safe, supportive environment for children in need.

Additional Foster Care Requirements

In addition to meeting the basic requirements, foster parents must also adhere to the following guidelines to ensure a safe and supportive environment for children:

  • Provide adequate sleeping space for all children placed in your home.
  • Limit the total number of children in the home to no more than 6, including your own children or children for whom you provide daycare.
  • Agree to a nonphysical discipline policy to promote positive behavior and emotional well-being.
  • Allow for fire, health, and safety inspections of the home to ensure it meets all safety standards.
  • Ensure that all pets in the home are vaccinated.
  • Obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification to ensure preparedness in emergency situations.
  • Complete TB testing as required by the local Health Department for all household members.
  • Attend 20 or more hours of training each year to stay informed and equipped with the necessary skills for fostering.

These requirements are designed to create the best possible environment for the children in your care. We appreciate your commitment to fostering and supporting children in need.
